Cloisonne Wire - Fine Silver Flat 0.15 x 0.8mm - 1metre.
Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné. The decoration is formed by first adding compartments (cloisons in French) to the metal object being worked on, by soldering or glueing silver, gold wires or copper thin strips (Cloisonne Wire) placed on their edges. These remain visible in the finished piece, separating the different compartments of the enamel pigment or inlays. These are often several enamel colours which then needs to be fired in a kiln. Experienced enamel artists also torch fire their cloisonne pieces.
The higher a cloisonne wire rests on the surface of a project, the more reflective the surface it creates will be and the greater the shadow it will cast when used with transparent enamels. Also the higher or deeper the cloisonne wire is, the greater the number of enamels layers that can be applied and fired. This is especially important with shaded enamel designs. A very effective design variation is to incorporate different thicknesses or depths of cloisonne wire within the same design.
