COPPRclay is considered to be easier to work with than BRONZclay. This is mainly because it sticks to itself better than BRONZclay does. The MOST notable difference is a more simplified firing schedule than is required for BRONZclay. Please Note: COPPRclay™ must be embedded in an activated carbon heat sink during kiln firing. COPPRclay requires Coconut shell activated carbon NOT Coal based activated carbon.
To reduce oxidation, COPPRclay piece(s) must be kiln fired embedded in
coconut shell–based activated carbon. Important: Some coal-based carbons may not fire
COPPRclay properly; we recommend using coconut shell–
based activated carbon.
Firing COPPRclay™ is a two-step process that uses low heat
to vaporize the binder, then high heat to sinter (fuse) the alloy.
1. Spread 2.5cm of coconut shell–based activated carbon
granules on the bottom of a stainless steel firing
2. Place the piece on top of the layer; if firing two or more
pieces, leave at least 1.25cm between pieces, more if the
pieces are large.
3. Pour more activated carbon granules on top of the
pieces until the container is filled 2.5cm from the top,
making sure there is a 1.25cm layer of granules on top of
the pieces. Again, if you are firing many pieces in layers,
make sure there is at least 1.25cm of space between the
vertical layers as well. Note: Do not fire more than 100
grams of clay at once; overloading may cause poor
sintering (fusing)
4. Place the stainless steel lid off centre on the firing container.
This allows for the circulation of oxygen which is essential to burn off the binder in the clay.
Place container in the kiln on stilts for good heat
circulation. Note: Front-loading kilns are cooler in the
front near the door, so the front of your firing container
will be cooler than the other sides. To compensate for this,
place the pieces closer to the sides and back of
the firing container, making sure you leave at least 1.25cm of
space between the pieces and the front of the firing pan.
If you have a top-loading kiln, there’s no need to adjust.

Regardless of thickness (embedded in coconut shell–based
activated carbon): Ramp at full speed to 927°C–982°C and hold for 3 hours (total firing time,
including ramp-time, will be about 4 hours). Most firings
perform well at 927°C. However, if you discover that your
pieces are not sintering properly, try firing them at 982°C.
Please Note: Blistering may occur at 982°C; if this occurs,
slightly decrease the firing temperature.
The two phase firing schedule above is recommended by the manufacturer,
however metal clay artists have had success using the following single stage firing
Embed sanded and finished COPPR clay pieces in coconut shell activated carbon.
Best not to lie pieces flat- stand them upright on edge embedded in activated carbon
Be aware of where you place pieces in the pan (preferably away from your kiln's cool spot.
Then cover embedded pieces with 10-15mm of coconut shell activated carbon.
Container does not need a lid or the lid should be offset to allow free circulation of air.
Air or oxygen is necessary to burn off the binder in the clay. Place the firing pan away from
any area of your kiln that you know to be a cool spot or does not have heating elements
(e.g.the door) Fire pieces at 899C for 2 hours. Allow bowl and contents to cool off in the kiln.
